Our story
Small batches, roasted to order, obsessed with the details.
Essential Roast started with a simple frustration: most coffee is stale before it reaches the cup. We set out to fix that — one honest, freshly roasted bag at a time.
Roasting is where good coffee becomes unforgettable.
The beginning
Built on freshness, not shelf life
We're a small crew that got tired of coffee designed to survive warehouses instead of taste good. So we built the opposite: a roaster that only makes what it can sell fresh, and dates every bag with the day it was roasted.
Every batch runs through the same loop — cup, adjust, roast, cup again — until the profile sings. Nothing leaves the shop until it's the coffee we'd want in our own kitchens.
“Coffee this good shouldn't be complicated. Source it honestly, roast it fresh, and get out of the bean's way.”
The Essential Roast team
Sourcing ethos
Traceable, seasonal, fairly bought
Great coffee begins long before the roaster. We buy from importers and farm partners who pay above commodity prices and reward quality, and we favor single-farm and cooperative lots we can actually name.
Coffee is a crop, so we roast with the seasons — chasing peak-harvest lots as they land and letting go of them when they fade. It means the lineup shifts through the year, and that's exactly the point.

Coffee, meet gear
The right tools for the right cup
A brilliant coffee can still be let down by a dull grinder or an uneven tamp. That's why we stock gear alongside our beans — the portafilters, tampers, grinders, and brewers we reach for every day.
We only sell equipment we'd stake a shot on. If it doesn't earn its place on our own bar, it doesn't make the shelf.
Brew guide
A better cup, four habits
You don't need a lab — just a few fundamentals that make every method taste its best.
Grind fresh, grind right
Grind just before you brew. Fine for espresso, medium for drip and pour-over, coarse for French press. A burr grinder is the single biggest upgrade to your cup.
Mind the ratio
Start at 1:16 — one gram of coffee to sixteen grams of water (about 22g coffee to a 350ml cup). Dial stronger or lighter from there to taste.
Water matters
Coffee is 98% water. Use filtered water just off the boil, around 200°F (93°C). Too hot scorches; too cool under-extracts and tastes sour.
Rest, then enjoy
Give freshly roasted beans a few days to settle after the roast date on the bag, then use them within a month of opening for peak flavor.

Logistics
Shipping & returns
We roast Monday through Thursday and ship within a day of roasting, so your coffee arrives at its freshest. Most U.S. orders arrive within 2–5 business days. Subscriptions always ship free; single orders ship free over $35.
Because coffee is roasted to order, we can't accept returns on opened bags — but we stand behind every one. If your coffee arrives damaged, or something isn't right, email us within 14 days and we'll make it good with a replacement or refund. Unused gear can be returned within 30 days.
Questions
Frequently asked
How fresh is the coffee?+
We roast to order in small batches and ship within a day of roasting. Every bag is stamped with its roast date — not a sell-by date — so you always know exactly how fresh your coffee is.
Whole bean or ground?+
Both. Whole bean keeps its flavor longest, but we'll grind any coffee to order for espresso, drip, pour-over, or French press — just choose your grind on the product page.
Where do you source your coffee?+
We buy through importers and farm partners who pay above commodity prices, and we favor traceable, single-farm and cooperative lots. If we can't stand behind how a coffee was grown and traded, we don't roast it.
Do you sell equipment too?+
We do — carefully chosen portafilters, tampers, grinders, brewers, and accessories. Great beans deserve great gear, so we only stock tools we actually use on our own bar.
